Ilvesheim Castle

Ilvesheim Castle is located in the middle of the community of Ilvesheim in the Rhein-Neckar district . The baroque style building is now owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg and houses the state school for the blind for the visually impaired and those with multiple disabilities.

history

For the first time the construction of a previous building, the Erlenburg, could be proven for the year 1511. The Junkers von Erligheim received the castle property and the place Ilvesheim as fief already in the year 1358 from the Count Palatine . After the family died out, the fiefdom was taken over by the Landschad von Steinach around 1571 . The Erlenburg was completely destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689.

Shortly after Lothar Friedrich von Hundheim (1668–1724) took over the feudal lordship , he began to rebuild the palace in the Baroque style in 1700. The execution took place as a three-story central building with four corner towers and onion domes. As the first minister of Elector Johann Wilhelm , it was intended to serve as a representative residence for him. The wing buildings were built between 1750 and 1773 and were then used as an orangery and kitchen. In the 18th century, an economic building and the administrative court were built as additional buildings. In the following years the von Hundheim family became impoverished and after the death of Alfred von Hundheim in 1855 the castle fell to the Baden state.

The state school for the blind was set up in the building as early as 1868. Another wing was added to the castle in 1903/04 as part of its use. Today, due to the construction of further school buildings, little can be seen of the palace park.
