Flinsbach Castle

The castle Flinsbach is an Outbound hilltop castle on a spur of the "High Mountain" at 240  m above sea level. NN east of the district of Flinsbach in the municipality of Helmstadt-Bargen in the Rhein-Neckar district ( Baden-Württemberg ).

history

Nothing is known about the origins of the castle. Its builders could be the Lords of Hirschhorn , who once owned the bailiwick rights over Flinsbach and another castle on the nearby Schlossbuckel between Helmstadt and Aglasterhausen. Possible builders are also the Counts of Hohenberg from Württemberg , who owned Flinsbach in the 14th century. Shards (ceramics and beaker tiles ) dated to the end of the 12th century and the end of the 13th century also leave the time of construction in the dark. Since the castle was sold by Count Rudolf III. von Hohenberg to the knight Wieptrecht von Helmstatt on April 20, 1380 is not mentioned and no fragments from the 15th century were found, it can be assumed that the castle had already been removed or at least was no longer used and was used as a quarry in later centuries House construction in Flinsbach was used.

Description of the castle stables

The two-part small castle complex , located a little deeper than the plateau, in the style of a tower castle , had a 40-meter-long, 5-meter-deep and up to 15-meter-wide neck ditch . The core castle probably formed a 20 by 30 meter rectangle cut off from the mountain slope with a 7 meter diameter depression in the ground, which suggests a castle tower on the neck ditch. A shield-like wall ( curtain wall ) suggests here.

The 20 by 10 meter downslope northeastern part of the castle stables , probably the bailey , facing finds of pottery sherds (13th and 14th centuries) and animal bone fragments to a housing, possibly a palace out. Finds of fragments of beaker tiles (13th century) indicate heating by a tiled stove.

The castle was probably built of stone with a half-timbered building on top . Finds of red-burnt clay chunks (fillings of the half-timbered structure) indicate that they were destroyed by fire.
