The Schanzenköpfle is a high mediaeval castle ruin above Leutershausen (formerly Liuthereshusen), a district of the Hirschberg community on Bergstrasse , in the Rhine-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg .

location

The ruin on the Schanzenköpfle is 400 meters above sea level on a spur of the Hohen Waid on the western edge of the Odenwald, southeast of Leutershausen. A ravine leads from the Schanzenköpfle to the lower-lying ruin of Hirschburg, 500 meters northwest .

history

The castles on the Schanzenköpfle and the Hirschberg were probably both built by the noble family of the Hirschberger (formerly Hirzberger). Based on the dating of broken fragments, it is assumed that the Schanzenköpfle was the original Hirschburg and was perhaps built at the beginning of the 12th century. The castle underneath was probably built by a branch of the family, the Strahlberger , around 1200.

The castle was never mentioned in a document as the "Schanzenköpfle". In the earliest documented mention around 1400, only the "upper castle hill above Hirtzberg" is mentioned, from which it is concluded that the castle was already abandoned and only the castle stables were left. It is not known exactly when and why it was abandoned. Fragments and metal finds date to the beginning of the 13th century.

Layout

The approximately 30 by 35 meter plateau of the castle on the artificially formed hill is enclosed by a curtain wall that has been exposed in two places. In the south are the foundations of a pincer gate. The spur, which slopes sharply on three sides, is surrounded by a ring trench, with a wall in front of it to the north.
