Wald-Michelbach Castle

The castle Wald-Michelbach is an Outbound castle in the center of Wald-Michelbach in the Bergstraße district in Hesse .

history

The castle was probably built in the 12th to 13th centuries on the site of today's Protestant church. At that time there was talk of an ecclesia (chapel or church) consecrated to Laurentius , which can be traced back to the possessions of the Lorsch Monastery in the area of Wald-Michelbach.

The lower part of the church tower is probably from the 12th to 13th century and the rest of the residential tower is a noble residence, probably built by the Lorsch monastery, as a "manor of the abbot" was named in a contract of 1264 and was pledged to the Palatinate in 1461 .

Building history

In 1480 there was a mention of "Brucken, Graben and Thorm". In the northern part of the fortifications, the Catholic church was built in the 18th century at the latest, whereby the northern moat must have been filled in. The ruins of the mighty central tower stood on the north-west corner until 1863, which the French destroyed in 1693 and the rest of the complex was affected. In 1868–69 the remains were repaired, the square and the western enclosure redesigned. In 1966 further backfills, renewal of the embankment of the trench and repairs took place.

description

According to a site plan from 1780, the Protestant church with the churchyard or cemetery was surrounded by a polygonal curtain wall . In the north-west of the curtain wall was the center tower (gate and bell tower) with a round arched gate, drawbridge and bells. In the east of the curtain wall a semicircular shell tower . The core complex was surrounded by a kennel with a moat and an outer moat wall.

The moat, wall remains and remains of the semicircular shell tower in the east of the curtain wall are still preserved from the former fortification .
