The (first) Jagdschloss Jägersburg , also known as the Round House or Rondell , was a hunting lodge built in the 17th century in the Jägersburg Forest near Einhausen (Hesse) . It is to be distinguished from the (new) hunting lodge Jägersburg , which was built about a kilometer away in the 18th century.

location

At this point the castle stood in the Jägersburger forest. To the right and left of the bench you can see two of the six paths that converge here in a star shape.

The place where the castle stood is north of Einhausen in the Jägersburger Wald, a few hundred meters east of the L3111 Einhausen - Groß-Rohrheim state road and south of the L3261 Biblis - Bensheim-Langwaden .

history

The castle, also known as the pleasure house or hunting lodge, was inaugurated by Landgrave Ludwig V of Hessen-Darmstadt on September 8, 1609. The aristocrat, who was enthusiastic about hunting, had it built in the middle of the forest or zoo houses , which are rich in game , named after the nearby village of (Groß-) Hausen .

The Landgrave baptized the building with the name Jägersburg , which resulted in the name Jägersburger Wald , which is still valid today, for the forest area in question. A rather unusual round shape was chosen for the small castle, with many small windows on all sides on two floors. On the one hand, the spectators of the hunt were able to observe what was happening, and on the other hand, the shooters could comfortably target the game that was being driven towards them. In 1791 there were 52 and in 1800 there were still 40 residents.

The building was also known to the population as the Rondell or Round House due to its floor plan . It was sold as dilapidated around 1738 and subsequently demolished.

Detail of the memorial plaque

Nowadays there are no structural remains to be seen. Only the star-shaped network of trails created especially for hunting , in the center of which the castle once stood, is still present in the forest. A wooden plaque reminds of the roundabout today , and the location is shown on hiking maps as the round house rest area .

The name Jägersburg has survived to this day as a name for the forest area and especially for the buildings around the former forest ranger's office and the second Jägersburg hunting lodge, which were subsequently built about a kilometer to the northwest.
