Fürstenstein Castle

The Burg Fiirstenstein is an Outbound Spur castle on a spur in 265 m above sea level of the castle Zwingenberg at the municipality Zwingenberg in Neckar-Odenwald (Baden-Württemberg).

history

The castle was built provocatively by the Archbishop of Mainz between August 1338 and November 1339 , presumably as a counter-castle just a few dozen meters above and near the lower Zwingenberg Castle . The reason for this was the 1338 the Count of Württemberg, Count Palatine Ruprecht I and the Archbishop of Mainz , Heinrich von Virneburg , enforced the right to open Castle Zwingenberg. Fürstenstein Castle had to be razed in December 1343 by royal decree .

description

The former castle complex, which extends over 100 meters on several narrow plateaus, shows only small remains of walls made of small and medium-sized rubble stones .

The castle only consisted of a 12 by 9 meter building, possibly a residential tower , to which a small, walled outer bailey was placed in front of the valley . A neck ditch was dug to the rising mountain slope in the east , in which there is a small square building remainder of unclear function.

On the area to the east of the neck ditch secured by a semicircular ditch and located a little above the castle complex, there are several plateaus that are supported by lining walls. These are interpreted as image positions .
