Neckarhausen Castle

Neckarhausen Castle is located in the middle of the Neckarhausen district of the Edingen-Neckarhausen community in the Rhein-Neckar district . The building, executed in classicism , is now owned by the municipality and houses, among other things, the municipal administration.

history

Originally, the castle stood on the site probably from about 1614 a posting station of Thurn and Taxis . This served the postal route between Rheinhausen bei Speyer and Frankfurt am Main , which was opened in the same year . Mannheim , then still young , joined in 1667 by sending a city messenger to Neckarhausen twice a week. The historical development is documented for the first time in a list of goods in 1682. The history of the post office ended in 1699 with the relocation to Mannheim. The heir of the then owner Johann Michael Susmann, Johann Georg von Susmann, built a mansion in the baroque style in 1746 to represent his position as Vice Chancellor at the Palatinate court.

In 1777 the property was bought by Baron Franz Albert von Oberndorff , who had been Count since 1790 . After major damage in 1784, the building was renovated. At that time there was a two-storey central building, a left corner pavilion with a flower garden in between and a barn on the left. Between 1824 and 1825 Alfred von Oberndorff commissioned a renovation of the house. The architect Jacob Friedrich Dyckerhoff was in charge of the renovation . The second floor of the house was expanded and the facade redesigned in a classical style. In 1839, Count Alfred von Oberndorff auctioned the neighboring castle of Count Leon von Luxburg together with the associated goods and incorporated the new possessions into the property.

Neckarhausen Castle was damaged in the battles during the Baden Revolution on June 21 and 22, 1849. The cannon balls walled into the facade are still evidence of this today. During a renovation shortly afterwards, the side buildings were connected to the main building by means of terraces. The palace was given its present-day appearance during the last major renovations between 1910 and 1911, when the corner buildings were raised and the terrace buildings were expanded. The architect Leonhard Schäfer from Darmstadt led the renovation. The municipality of Neckarhausen bought the building in 1960 and extensively renovated it after the merger to form the municipality of Edingen-Neckarhausen at the end of 1975 to 1980. Today, in addition to the municipal administration, the building houses a number of clubs, the public library and a municipal museum. Other users are the adult education center and the music school. The former dining room now serves as a council hall.

Castle Park

In addition to the castle, there is a three-hectare park on the site . In 1789 a three-part park can be found in old municipal plans. In addition to a small flower garden and a kitchen garden behind the manor house with a small part of the park in the English style, the landscape garden that no longer exists between the Neckar and the castle was laid out. The gardens were laid out from 1783 by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell . The kitchen garden was redesigned into an English landscape garden from 1828. An ice cellar, which kept blocks of ice from the frozen Neckar cool into the summer, as well as the former orangery , which was redesigned into a chapel at the beginning of the 20th century and renovated as an event room in 2008, are still visible today.
