In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the new municipality of Fischbachtal was born on December 11, 1971 with the signing of the border change agreement in the chapel of Lichtenberg Castle . It was formed on December 31, 1971 through the voluntary amalgamation of the six previously independent municipalities of Steinau, Billings, Meßbach, Nonrod, Lichtenberg and Niedernhausen. These districts have long been closely linked geographically, economically and culturally. The new name did not favor any of the traditional districts. For the area of each of the earlier municipalities, a local district with a local advisory council and local councilor was set up in accordance with the Hessian municipal code. Culture and sights

Buildings

Lichtenberg Castle - Excerpt from the Topographia Hassiae by Matthäus Merian 1655

At the southern end of the ridge on which Lichtenberg and its castle are located, there are remains of the Heuneburg (in the first mention in the Salbuch of the Lichtenberg office in 1589 as "Quirnburg"), a Celtic ring wall from the younger Iron Age (500 to 50 BC). BC), the La Tène period . It should not be confused with the hilltop settlement of the same name on the Danube near Hundersingen , which was rebuilt as a museum .

It is generally assumed that the Counts of Katzenelnbogen Katzenelnbogen built a castle around the year 1200; Count Diether IV von Katzenelnbogen, who called himself Comes de Lichtenberg , is reported from the year 1228 . Landgrave Georg I of Hessen-Darmstadt had Lichtenberg Castle built on the foundation walls of the castle between 1570 and 1581 , which has been the landmark and cultural center of the valley since then.

The renaissance building houses the Odenwald landscape museum on three floors. There you can also see works by Johannes Lippmann (1858–1935), “the painter of the Odenwald and his people”, who lived in Lichtenberg from 1908.

The bulwark - called "Krautbütt" (however, the locals say bulwark) erected in front of the castle as a gun turret in 1503 - rises on a single granite dome as a three-storey rotunda in the middle of Lichtenberg. It was created in response to changing forms of warfare in the Middle Ages. The tower with a diameter of almost 19 meters is 15 meters high and has a wall thickness of almost six meters on the ground floor. The tower can be visited and offers a good panoramic view of the region from its viewing platform .

The Protestant snail chapel in the Billings district, inaugurated in 1967, is a concrete building in the shape of a snail shell .

Hottenbacher Hof

The Hottenbacher Hof ( 49 ° 45 ′ 44.5 ″  N , 8 ° 46 ′ 55.6 ″  E ) is a historic estate near Klein-Bieberau, whose first documentary mention dates back to the 14th century and which continues to this day (with the exception of one Time in the Thirty Years War ) is used.

The Hottenbacher Hof is a specialty in the Fischbachtal. Although it belongs to the district of Lichtenberg as a district, it is postally assigned to Modautal , where it is also connected to traffic.

Nature and protected areas

The forest areas around the Fischbachtal belong to the Natura2000 area "Beech forests of the Vorderen Odenwald" (FFH area 6218-302). In the floodplain of Fischbach and Messbach, the Natura2000 area “Herrensee von Niedernhausen” is under protection (FFH area 6218-305).

The geological natural monument " Zindenauer Schlösschen ", a rock group with oaks and beeches, is located on the Steinkopf in the Steinau district .
