Bulwark

The bulwark is a late medieval battery tower in the southern Hessian community Fischbachtal , in the district of Lichtenberg .

Architecture and history

The bulwark, which stands approx. 400 m west of Lichtenberg Castle on a granite dome, is two-storey on a circular floor plan with a wall thickness of approx. 5.90 m. The tower, built in 1503, has a diameter of about 19 meters and is 15 meters high. The two interiors of the bulwark are domed . The stairs inside the tower are in the thickness of the wall. The doors to the small adjoining rooms are rounded with a simple bevel or closed with a keel arch . On the stepped console there is a spout and toilet bay decorated with tracery and relief . A crenellated crown forms the upper end of the bulwark .

The bulwark was part of the defense of Lichtenberg Castle. For the associated castle hat , in 1684 by order of the Landgrave and Regent Elisabeth Dorothea, the burgrave was temporarily responsible without the local central team. At this time Christmann Boßler was in the office of the princely burgrave of Lichtenberg.

Monument protection

As a typical example of the architecture of that time in the Fischbachtal and Odenwald , the bulwark was placed under monument protection.

view

The bulwark is currently only accessible as part of guided tours by the Geopark on-site guide Fischbachtal and offers a good view of Lichtenberg, the castle and the Fischbachtal from its upper platform .
