Live and act

Lippmann was the son of the dressmaker in Offenbach am Main Christian Lippmann (1828–1877) and his wife Marie nee Knorr (1826–1875).

His apprenticeship as a lithographer, his later day job, he spent at the Technical School (now College of Design Offenbach ), in the studio of Ferdinand Karl Klimsch and the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt . He studied drawing and drafting in Dresden and Munich with Paul Schulze-Naumburg .

From 1880–1908 he was artistic director of the lithographic art establishment and printing company Friedrich Schoembs in Offenbach and also its partner. In 1882 he married Frieda Schoembs, with whom he had two sons; the older, Karl Friedrich Lippmann (1883–1957), was known as a landscape , figure and flower painter.

In 1908 he moved to his own house in Lichtenberg and lived there as a freelance artist. If he had already made a name for himself as a landscape painter, the focus of his painting was now on people, especially those who work, and portraits . In 1928 the Kunstverein Darmstadt organized a comprehensive collective exhibition on his 70th birthday . He is buried in the old cemetery in Offenbach .

Johannes Lippmann mainly painted oil paintings , he mainly captured Odenwald people and landscapes, so that he was given the title “Painter of the Odenwald and its people”. In 1933, on his 75th birthday, a large exhibition was presented in the Darmstadt art gallery. He is buried in the old cemetery in Offenbach.

Lippmann did not submit to modern trends and did not pose problems in his work, but instead realized a simple realism that testifies to intense perception in nature . In this sense, his work is not exciting, perhaps because of that it is timeless, so to speak.

Johannes Lippmann was a member of the German Association of Artists .
