Location of Lehr in Ulm

Lehr is a district of Ulm and is located about three kilometers north of the city center. With its currently around 2,854 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), it is one of the smaller districts of Ulm. Originally, Lehr was a clearing settlement consisting of several farms in the nearby forest area "Oberer Eselsberg" and was first mentioned in 1272 as "Löher".

In contrast to many settlements and places that end in "-ingen", are of Alemannic origin and were founded within the first centuries after their immigration, the area around Lehr was settled later and was initially owned by the Reichenau monastery , whereupon the cross in the upper part of the coat of arms refers. The first documented mention dates from the year 1272. In the 12th and 13th centuries the farms became fiefs of various nobles, gradually changed to the ownership of Ulm patricians and then came under rule from around the middle of the 15th century the imperial city of Ulm. After Ulm lost its status as an imperial city due to Napoleon in 1804, farmers and mercenaries acquired the farms.

In 1742 there were 20 houses in Lehr. Before the outbreak of the Second World War , the town had around 370 inhabitants, who were mainly active in agriculture . The great air raid of December 17, 1944 destroyed 13 houses and 18 barns. The reconstruction began immediately after the end of the war with material from the destroyed Ulm. With the influx of displaced people , the population grew to over 600 by 1953. In 1960, Lehr had around 800 inhabitants and consisted of around 35 farms. Since then, the place has developed into a workers' and residential community.

On January 1, 1975, Lehr was incorporated into the city of Ulm and received its own local council and a full-time mayor, who is also responsible for the neighboring town of Mähringen .

Surname

Löher is the plural of "Loh", which means a small, light forest. In Swabian a Loh was pronounced as "Lau", which can still be found in the field name "Birkenlauh" , which is still used today . The majority of these are "Läuer", in Swabian "Laier", and a term still used today, Lehrs. The three trees in the lower part of the coat of arms indicate the settlement as a cleared area.

Protestant church

The Protestant Christians Lehrs are members of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg and have formed a joint parish with Mähringen since the Reformation . Until the end of the war, the citizens of Lehr were practically without exception Protestant.

The place of worship is the relatively small Protestant Marienkirche. It was built between 1470 and 1480 and contains many very valuable, rare medieval frescoes and paintings from the 15th century. In 2003 the church was extensively restored. There is also a modern parish hall in the vicinity of the church. The Evangelical Church Community of Lehr runs two kindergartens in Lehr and is characterized by an active community life.

Catholic Church

The Catholic Christians have belonged to the parish of St. Maria Suso in Ulm since 1984 , which in addition to the Eselsberg district also includes Mähringen. The Catholics who moved in after 1945 after teaching, mainly displaced from their homes, were looked after by the Catholic Parish Office in Bollingen until 1983 .

The Catholic All Saints Church is a square concrete church built from 1972 to 1975. It was decorated with large frescoes by the Bollinger pastor and artist Nikolaus Stark . He also designed the altar, ambo , cross and tabernacle (1975), a cycle of stained glass windows on creation (1986) and a painted way of the cross (1996). The church's building complex also includes community and youth rooms. The All Saints Church is also left to the Protestant parish on occasions with a larger number of worshipers in ecumenical union.

Sports

In addition to well-known sports such as soccer, handball, volleyball, skiing, table tennis, gymnastics and tennis, the local sports club SC Lehr also has a theater group.

Volunteer firefighter

The volunteer fire brigade in Lehr was founded in 1888. Today the Lehr volunteer fire brigade is a department of the Ulm fire brigade . In addition to the youth fire brigade , which has existed since 1995, the operations department and the age department, there is a marching band in Lehr . There are four emergency vehicles in the fire station built in 1952 and expanded in 1996 . One of these emergency vehicles is a so-called equipment trolley for dangerous goods (GW-G for short), an equipment trolley equipped for handling acids and alkalis.
