St. Maria Suso is a Roman Catholic church in Ulm , consecrated in 1956 , in the Eselsberg district.

history

With the establishment of new residential areas on Ulm's Eselsberg in the 1950s (numerous displaced persons or returnees from the Second World War among the newcomers), there was also a need for new church buildings. For this reason, the Catholic Church of St. Maria Suso was built on the southern slope of Eselsberg from 1954 to 1956 (address: Mähringer Weg 51, 89075 Ulm), which was followed in 1957 by the Evangelical Church of St. Luke about 400 m to the east . The name is reminiscent of Heinrich Suso , a medieval mystic who also worked in Ulm.

A previous church of the same name (also known as the Suso Chapel) was located on Wilhelmstrasse in Ulm's Neustadt district. The foundation stone was laid on November 13, 1927, the inauguration on July 12, 1928. The building by the architect Hans Herkommer had round arched windows and the interior was also characterized by round arches. The altarpiece was by Wilhelm Geyer , who in 1935 also made a way of the cross in sgraffito technique. The church building, which no longer exists, was largely destroyed in the Second World War, but served as an emergency church until 1955.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building at the Ulm Eselsberg took place on October 25, 1954, the laying of the foundation stone on July 17, 1955, the topping-out ceremony on September 5, 1955, and the first service on November 27, 1955 in the still unfinished church instead of. The church was consecrated on July 1, 1956 (in memory of the “Queen of the Holy Rosary, Mary”). The architect was Josef Joraschky .

In the south there is a 28 m high free-standing tower made of 2 concrete panels, covered by an inclined concrete slab, through which the main entrance leads to the church via a connecting wing. The pent roof of the nave (500 to 600 seats) rises towards the choir, while the walls gradually taper towards the altar. The altar, baptismal font and sermon chair are made of Treuchtlingen marble . While the windows in the vestibule come from the old church, the glass windows in the nave were designed by Wilhelm Geyer . The outside of the altar wall bears a sgraffito, also by Wilhelm Geyer, symbolizing "Maria, Queen of the Rosary", to which Heinrich Suso refers. The chancel was rebuilt in 1966 by the Berlin artist Paul Brandenburg under Pastor Ferdinand Bamberger . The six bronze sculptures on the west portal were created in 1974 by Sieger Köder , who was vicar here from 1971 to 1975; he also created a silver-colored cross on the choir wall, wall hangings and a cycle of passion.

In 2004 the church received an extension with a new community center and chapel. The current organ (1967, Späth) is to be replaced by a new instrument.
