The Lukaskirche is a Protestant parish church in Ulm , consecrated in 1957 , in the Eselsberg district.

History and architecture

With the establishment of new residential areas on Ulm's Eselsberg in the 1950s (numerous displaced persons or returnees from the Second World War among the newcomers), there was also a need for new church buildings. The Evangelical St. Luke Church was built in 1956/57 on the southern slope of Eselsberg (about 400 m west of the recently completed Roman Catholic Church of St. Maria Suso ) (address: Herrmann-Stehr-Weg 3, 89075 Ulm).

The foundation stone for the Lukas Church was laid on July 29, 1956, the topping-out ceremony on March 24, 1957. The inauguration took place on October 20, 1957. The architect of the church building with around 660 seats in the nave, a separable community hall, gallery and community rooms in the basement was Wilhelm Bauer . The rectangular building, which lies along a step, has a curved barrel roof sloping to the south. The south side is structured by multi-colored glazed high windows.

The ship has a wooden ceiling. The artistic design of the interior , based on the Gospel of Luke , was the responsibility of the sculptor and painter Helmuth Uhrig (1906–1979) from Heidenheim an der Brenz . The south side is dominated by a large window depicting the feeding of the five thousand . The altar in the choir shows a relief of the history of the Emmaus, carved in Maulbronn sandstone . The altar cross is based on a design by Sieger Köder . The front wall of the choir bears a 3.65 m tall wooden figure of the blessing, ascending Christ . The pulpit shows reliefs on three sides with stories from the beginning of Jesus, so on the front the encounter between Mary and the cousin Elizabeth . John the Baptist calling to repentance is depicted on the baptismal font .

The free-standing, slender church tower has two brick and two concrete walls and a slightly curved roof panel.

On the south side of the church, solar modules (20 m 2 , power approx. 2 kW) were installed vertically on the wall in 2002 .

As a result of structural defects, energetic weaknesses and changed usage requirements, major renovations began in 2013. An almost complete new building, which was initially planned, turned out to be impossible because the church had meanwhile been placed under monument protection. Thus the church interior was preserved. As part of the 15-month renovation, a daycare center was set up in the basement. As a replacement for the community rooms that were no longer available, a two-storey community building was built east of the tower and church. The inauguration of the new community rooms took place on July 27, 2014.
