The Buchertsgräben near Schlierbach are a nature reserve in the municipality of Schaafheim , districts Schlierbach and Schaafheim, in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg in southern Hesse . The protected area was designated by ordinance of January 21, 1986.

location

The “Buchertsgräben bei Schlierbach” nature reserve is located on the northern foothills of the Odenwald and is part of the Kleine Bergstrasse nature reserve in the Reinheimer Hügelland . It is located about 1.5 kilometers southwest of Schlierbach. The reserve covers an area of 51.57 hectares.

Protection purpose

With the protection, a landscape- defining , richly structured forest area with loess gorges is to be preserved. These biotopes are to be secured and improved as a habitat for numerous rare plant and animal species. The area is also geologically significant.

description

The nature reserve is a forest surrounded by agricultural land, which is criss- crossed by several deep loess ditches and is very structured. Most of it consists of beech forest and spruce trees that have died out since the dry summer of 2018. Adjacent small areas of semi-arid grassland can be found , and parts of today's forest on the loess slopes are also relics of former semi-arid grassland. Eight types of orchid as well as common gentian , dwarf elder , common adder tongue , forest barley and round-leaved bedstraw are rare or remarkable plant species . The butterflies are also strikingly rich in species.
