The Altneckarlachen of Alsbach, Hähnlein and Bickenbach are a nature reserve in the districts of Alsbach-Hähnlein and Hähnlein (community Alsbach-Hähnlein), and Bickenbach in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg in southern Hesse . It was designated by ordinance of August 28, 1990 and covers an area of 89.24 hectares.

location

The reserve is located in the Hessian Rhine Plain - Central Neckarried natural area and extends west of Bickenbach and north of Hähnlein. It consists of the areas Waldlache, Fasanenlache, Schächerlache and Hainlache as well as the elevations on the hamlet hill . The A5 runs along the north-eastern edge . The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary " Hessische Altneckarschlingen " (6217-403).

Protection purpose

A characteristic section of silted up river loops of the Altneckar is to be secured through the protection. It is a wetland predominantly on fens with rare plant species and communities. Maintenance measures should extend the existing agricultural use and develop it into permanent grassland. The existing quarry forest is to be improved through maintenance interventions.

Water management, flora and fauna

The development of the Altneckar loops is strongly influenced by the fluctuating groundwater levels in the Hessian Ried . While seasonal fluctuations predominated until the 1960s, periods of drought lasting several years were more common after that. Due to the extraction of groundwater in the reed, the silted up river arms temporarily lost their connection to the groundwater and the peaty terrain sagged by a few decimeters to 90.0–90.6 meters above sea level.

In the area of the Schächerlache and Waldlache there are reed stands . With the help of a wind turbine, the areas have been wetted since 1995 in order to obtain a permanent shallow water zone with an extensive silting belt. Little grebes , bluethroats , water rails and marsh harriers breed here , as well as the little bittern , the great reed warbler and the reed warbler . The grove and pheasant pool is covered with black alder forest, extensive grassland grazed with cattle and reed beds. In the wetter years, teal , water rail and whinchat had brooded there, in the years up to 2017 only marsh harriers. Therefore, watering was recommended here in 2017 as well.

The old neckerchiefs are not only an important habitat for the bird world, amphibians such as the water frog , pond newt and natterjack toad , fish ( three-spined stickleback ) and bats ( great noctule ) also live here. 275 species of large butterflies have been identified, including numerous endangered and rare species.

geology

Occasionally the old neckar puddles are also referred to as the “Rheinrandflusslachen”. The tributary of the original Rhine consisted not only of the Alt-Neckar, but also absorbed the water of the Black Forest rivers. It flowed between the Rhine and the eastern edge of the mountains and flowed into the Rhine at Trebur until the Neckar took its current course about 8,000 years ago. The clay and clay sediments deposited in the silting up river arms led to wet soils, with high groundwater levels, peat formed, as did the nearby Pfungstädter Moor .

The Altneckar pools can be visited on a nearly six kilometer long biotope tour of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district.
