The Bergstrasse Nature Conservation Center (NZB) is a facility for environmental education and experience on the Hessian Bergstrasse .

Seat

The nature conservation center with outdoor area is located on the Erlache near Bensheim on the edge of a depression that was created by the prehistoric Altneckar. The renatured part of the gravel pit and the adjacent Altneckararm are a nature reserve and an EU bird sanctuary (bird sanctuary "Hessische Altneckarschlingen").

The building received an award on the “ Architecture Day ” 2005. The building shows trendsetting technologies and materials: wood pellet heating , solar thermal energy , green roofs , shelter for animals on the house, regional building materials, building material recycling and much more.

Surroundings

The Bergstrasse Nature Conservation Center is located in the area of a former river system of the post-glacial course of the Neckar , which meandered along the eastern edge of the Rhine plain, turned northwest at the level of Pfungstadt and flowed into the Rhine at Trebur .

In December 2000, approx. 48 hectares in the area were designated as the “ Erlache bei Bensheimnature reserve. With the protection of alder forests and pastures , grassland , reed beds and aquatic plant communities with the animal and plant species occurring there are to be protected. Since autumn 2017 parts of the area have been grazed with water buffalo .

The protection of these areas is also to be improved through the activities of the nature conservation center. Here z. B. six amphibian species detected and rare insect species such as the grain buck ( Megopis scabricornis ), an endangered beetle species on the Red List. The sand lizard population has also increased significantly since the nature conservation center was founded. The peregrine falcon was first established in the area through the conservation efforts of the nature conservation center together with the city of Bensheim, the NABU Hessen and the DB AG.

The building itself was designed in such a way that it not only complies with the requirements for energy-saving construction, but also offers animals a habitat. Black redstart , wagtail , great tit , starling and house sparrow breed on the building itself . The cavities under the board cladding are used annually by rough-skin bats as mating quarters.

profile

In the nature conservation center there is an exhibition with changing focuses, an environmental library, a workshop and a media room. The exhibition was supported with funds from the Hessian Nature Conservation Foundation .

In the outdoor area there are adventure areas such as a herb spiral, fireplace, a geological wall with rocks from the crystalline Odenwald , a frog pond for independent research, a cottage garden, several bee colonies, a dry stone wall , a stone oven, humming stone and others.

The two environmental pedagogical pillars of the NZB are, on the one hand, specialist lectures, excursions and exhibitions for those particularly interested, and on the other hand, direct nature experience for children and families. Introducing and inspiring people to nature at an early stage is one of the basic ideas behind the facility.

As an extracurricular learning location , the Bergstrasse Nature Conservation Center has been an advice center for the environmental schools in the Bergstrasse and Odenwald districts since 2005. The NZB offers its events through an annual program which, in addition to fixed dates, also includes freely bookable offers for groups. You can also deal with nature independently here.

The NZB was opened on the occasion of the Hessentag in Heppenheim in June 2004 and has the legal form of a non-profit GmbH. The NZB is also the environmental education station of the Geo-Naturpark Bergstrasse Odenwald .

The shareholders are the Bergstrasse district , the city of Bensheim and the Bensheim Marketing and Development Company (MEGB).
