Architecture Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Day of Architecture is an annually held event in Germany, in which objects and projects of contemporary architecture to the general public are presented. It usually takes place on the last weekend in June. The event is organized by the chambers of architects of the federal states and coordinated by the Federal Chamber of Architects (BAK). Since 2002 there has been a central “federal kick-off”. In some federal states , the event is called Architektouren , z. B. in Bavaria and Thuringia.

description

Many buildings that are otherwise inaccessible or only accessible to a limited extent can be visited during the weekend. Often the builders , owners or architects offer tours. A supporting program is also offered, which can range from discussion events and film screenings to a parallel “Open Architecture Office Day” or an entire architecture week.

The aim of the event is "to use contemporary, successful everyday architecture to provide information about the advantages of building with architects and to promote understanding of the architect's achievements". Federal Chamber of Architects President Peter Conradi explained at the federal kick-off in 2003: "We are showing contemporary architecture in its diversity and breadth, not just in some metropolises, but throughout Germany. We want to emphasize the meaning and purpose of architecture nationwide."

The background to this initiative is assumed to be the dramatic decline in the order situation and the poor economic situation of many German architects in the previous years. Architecture Day is now popular: In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, around 40,000 visitors came in 2013 to see "dream houses" or examples of good energy-efficient renovation.

In Austria there are the Architecture Days with similar events.

development

The model for the event was the Open Monument Day , which has been held nationwide since 1993. The first day of architecture took place in 1994 in Hesse , Rhineland-Palatinate , Saarland and Thuringia . In the following years, more and more chambers of architects took part.
