Schwedenkai

Schwedenkai

The Schwedenkai is a harbor quay on the western bank of the Kiel Fjord right in the center of Kiel .

Structure and use

The architecture of the Schwedenkai is supposed to be reminiscent of a ship
Former terminal building

The terminal building combines the service functions for passengers and freight on the lower levels with administrative tasks on the office floors above. The Swedish shipping company Stena Line's passenger ferries operate from the Schwedenkai on the Kiel - Gothenburg route . In addition to the requirements of the regular ferry service of the Stena Line, the terminal also serves to handle cruise ships . For this purpose, the ship's berth at Bollhörnkai-Nord was connected to the terminal building via a new passenger gangway. The core of the building are high-performance handling facilities for passenger and freight traffic on the lower floors. Above it rises a modern office complex with the appearance of a ship's bow with a view of the Kiel harbor and the inner fjord .

In 2018, around 29,000 units were handled in combined transport at the Schwedenkai . By adding a third track for seaport hinterland traffic in 2020, capacities will be increased significantly.

With the Norway quay and the Ostseekai , the Schwedenkai is the hub for trade / ferry traffic with Scandinavia .

Ferry system

The Schwedenkai had to be structurally expanded due to increasing demands on the capacities (see below). In addition to the requirements of the shipping company Stena Line as a ferry dock and RoRo terminal, the new Schwedenkai is used to handle cruise ships that are docking in Kiel in ever larger numbers and with more and more tourists . For this purpose, the berth at the Schwedenkai was connected to the terminal building via a new passenger gangway. The quay length of the Schwedenkai is 720 meters.

Office complex

Above it rises the Office Tower, an office building that not only houses the shipping company - Administration Stena Line but also companies that do not belong directly to the port. The terminal building offers office space on nine floors. In addition to its function as an office building, the terminal is also an event location and also houses restaurants . Approx. 650 m² of office space is available on each floor of the Schwedenkai building.

operator

The Port of Kiel GmbH & Co. KG operates Kiel's commercial port on behalf of the state capital of Kiel and is a wholly owned subsidiary it is. A good 5 million tons of cargo are handled annually via the various terminal facilities; 2 million passengers embark or disembark. The terminal building is the seat of the Kiel Seaport Administration and Stena Line in Germany.

history

Before 1982, the Schwedenkai was part of the Bollhörnkai . In 1982 a new ferry pier was built for ferry traffic to Gothenburg, which has since been called the Schwedenkai. The new Schwedenkai, which was completed in October 2010, was built, among other things, because the Stena Line replaced the ships Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica previously used on the Kiel - Gothenburg route in 2010 and 2011 with the larger ships Stena Germanica III and Stena Scandinavica IV . The construction time was almost 2½ years. A renovation of the old building would be, according to the investor come more expensive overall. With financial support from the state of Schleswig-Holstein , a total of 16 million euros was invested in the Schwedenkai.

The Schwedenkai goes back to the designs of the architects KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten and was built by the Schwedenkai consortium (the companies Heinrich Karstens and Friedrich Helbig).

New building

The opening of the ferry and cruise terminal at Schwedenkai marks the beginning of a new era in Kiel city harbor. In addition to the terminal opening, in 2010 and 2011 the Stena Line replaced the ships previously used on the Kiel - Göteborg route with much larger ships, the Stena Germanica III and the Stena Scandinavica IV , which are among the longest ferries in the world. The previous throughput of 40,000 cargo units annually can thus more than double. A good 30 million euros were invested in the Schwedenkai, of which around 18 million euros were invested in the terminal building and 12 million euros in optimizing the terminal logistics and infrastructure.

location

The new Schwedenkai is located in the old town and suburbs of Kiel and is located directly in the city center, opposite the New Town Hall .
