The species is widespread in Central and Southern Europe and the Middle East. It populates loose trees and orchards with poplars, chestnuts, willows, apple trees or beeches. The adults fly in July and August. During the day, the nocturnal animals hide under loose bark or in the larval feeding tunnels of the breeding trees. They can also be found on the breeding trees in the first hours of the night. The species loves warmth and is very rare in Central Europe. In Germany it is considered critically endangered ( Red List 1).
