Red list of endangered animals, plants and fungi in Germany

The Red List of Endangered Animals, Plants and Mushrooms in Germany is a Red List of Endangered Species published by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation for the area of Germany . There are at least 48,000 animal species and more than 24,000 plants and fungi in Germany. After the versions from 1996 and 1998, a new edition for 2020 is being worked on.

In addition, there are state lists for the individual German federal states, for example the Red List of Endangered Plants, Fungi and Animals in North Rhine-Westphalia since 1979 and the Red List of Fern and Seed Plants of Saxony since 1978 . The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food has also published the Red List of endangered indigenous crops in Germany since 2009 . The Red List of Breeding Birds in Germany is published by the National Committee of the Red List of Birds on behalf of the German Council for Bird Protection .

The "Methodological instructions for creating red lists of endangered animals, plants and fungi" are used to create the lists.

Category 0 - Extinct or Lost

Species that have disappeared in the reference area or of which wild populations are no longer known.

Category 1 - Critically Endangered

Species that are so critically endangered that they will become extinct in the foreseeable future if the causes of threat persist.

Category 2 - Endangered

Species that have declined significantly or are threatened by ongoing or foreseeable human impacts.

Category 3 - Endangered

Species that have declined noticeably or are threatened by ongoing or foreseeable human impacts.

Category G - risk of unknown extent

Species that are endangered.

Category R - Extremely Rare

Extremely rare or very locally occurring species whose populations have not decreased in total in the long or short term and which are not currently threatened, but are particularly susceptible to unforeseeable threats.

Category V - warning list

Species that have declined noticeably but are not currently endangered. If the inventory-reducing effects persist, it is likely to be classified in the "Endangered" category in the near future.

Category D - insufficient data

Information on distribution, biology and endangerment of a species is insufficient.

Category * - Not at risk

Species are not currently considered endangered.

Category ♦ - Not rated

No hazard analysis is carried out for these species.
