The Backhausteich is a small, artificial still water .
geography
The Backhausteich is located south of the Kranichstein hunting lodge . To the west of the Backhaus pond is a second, smaller pond; the so-called duck pond . The ponds are fed by several small streams that spring east of the Backhaus pond in the Kranichstein wildlife park .
history
The pond was named after the no longer existing bakery that stood on the shore of the lake.
The Backhaus pond was founded in 1579 - under the reign of Count I. Georg - created. The pond system comes from the same construction period as the hunting lodge.
Landgrave Georg I started the systematic pond management . Fish farming helped the sovereigns to supply their large households.

The Backhausteich is surrounded by mixed forest. Water lilies cover a large part of the pond.

Different species of birds live in the pond; u. a. Ducks , wild geese and kites .

The Backhausteich is the starting point and transit point for several hiking trails .
