The Heiligenteich is located on the northeastern edge of Darmstadt-Kranichstein . The pond is around 150 meters long and around 70 meters wide.
History and description
In 1573 Landgrave Georg I bought the so-called "Holy Meadow". The meadow was probably formerly owned by a spiritual institution. Under the reign of Landgrave George I, the pond was created for carp farming .
The pond swamped quickly because it had little flow.
In 1816 the pond was drained and leased to the Kranichstein estate as a meadow . At that time, transporting fish from the Rhine was cheaper than owning fish . The meadow yield was low.
At the end of the 19th century the pond was flooded again by the estate manager Georg Baumann. The pond was now used for wintry ice production for the Darmstadt breweries. At that time it was called "Baumannsteich".
Today the pond bears its historically correct name again. The Heiligenteich is drained today via an overflow into the Ruthsenbach . The pond is currently privately owned. The area was fenced in in 2016.
fauna
Various bird species live in the Heiligenteich; including ducks , kites and wild geese . Numerous native fish species animate the pond.
flora
The Heiligenteich is surrounded by meadows .
