History and description
The Hofgut Kranichstein was under the reign of the Hesse-Darmstadt urban Landgrave I. Georg created. The farm initially served as a sheep farm. With the help of sheep breeding - as well as fish farming - the landgraves fed their court with numerous officials and domestics .
Stylistically, the four-axle, two-storey manor house with the stables belongs to the Baroque era . The manor house has four window axes , is plastered and the corners are stoned with red Odenwald sandstone blocks . The manor house is crowned by a slate-covered mansard roof with four distinctive gable domes facing the inner courtyard . All buildings were located in an elongated square with a large inner courtyard. The manor house in the north is accompanied to the west by an elongated building with a gable roof, in the west a barn and former stables in the south and east, the east as brick buildings. The entrance to the estate via a wrought iron gate is in the southeast. The newer riding facilities were built on to the northwest of the estate.
The former estate, today also simply called Kranichsteiner Hof or Reiterhof Kranichstein , is the Hessian state performance center for riders and riding stables . He organizes his own horse shows . The equestrian facility, which specializes in dressage and jumping , has two riding arenas , a lunging hall , four outdoor areas, a lunging area and a horse walker. Today the restaurant Die Sattlerei is located in the former manor house .
