geography
The Brentano lake is located in the "Heinrich-von-Brentano-Anlage", in the middle of Darmstadt-Kranichstein. The large pond is about 240 meters long and about 100 meters wide. The pond is fed by the Ruthsenbach .
History and description
The pond was known in the Middle Ages as "Oberster Arheilger Woog". At that time it was a natural accumulation of water in a meadow depression that dried up in the summer months. The Counts of Katzenelnbogen used the natural water for fish farming .
Since the reign of Landgrave George I , the pond has also played an important role in sheep farming.
Later it was called "Amosenteich" - after its owner at the time, the Kranichsteiner Ziegler Amos Schneider.
In 1895 the pond was transferred to the Kranichstein estate and was later drained.
In 1964 the pond was created permanently as a rain retention basin . A redesign of the shore zone is planned.
fauna
Various bird species live on Lake Brentano; including ducks , kites and wild geese . Numerous native fish species animate the pond.
etymology
The Brentano lake was named after Heinrich von Brentano .
