History and description
The pond was named after the old stone bridge over the Ruthsenbach . The Steinbrücker pond was probably created under the reign of Landgrave Georg I by damming the Ruthsenbach . Landgrave Georg I started the systematic pond management . Fish farming helped the sovereigns to supply their large households.
The approx. 3 hectare pond is approx. 1.5 meters deep at its deepest point; and becomes flatter towards the south. The Steinbrücker pond is surrounded by forest all around. On the north side is Dieburger Strasse and two weirs . There are forest meadows on the east and west sides . There is a swamp-like area on the south side . In earlier times the pond was mainly used for fish farming . Due to the flow of the Ruthsenbach it was suitable as a fishing water.
In 1826 the pond was completely swampy and was leased as a meadow. In 1901, the Oberwaldhaus excursion restaurant was built on the site of the old forester's house. In 1904 the Steinbrücker pond was restored. In 1967 the meadow area by the pond was transformed into a leisure and recreation center.
In the 2010s, the pond was cleared of silt and the shore zone restored. Today the Steinbrücker pond also serves as a rain retention basin .
