The Marktbrunnen is a fountain in Darmstadt .

History and description

Market square with fountain (around 1900)

The market fountain was built in 1780 according to plans by the civil engineer Johann Helfrich von Müller . The sculptor Duchert and the stone carver Schipper from Heidelberg carried out the construction. The new market fountain replaced the older fountain from 1546.

The classical fountain system consists of a round basin made of red sandstone . The parapet of the basin contains cranked fields with flower hangings and rosettes . In the middle of the fountain stands an obelisk made of red sandstone, decorated with ribbon work , on four spheres . In the base of the fountain there is four times the monogram of Louis IX .

The fountain was fed by the water pipe laid in 1546 for the first market fountain. In 1808 the water pipe was lowered.

The market fountain was renovated in the 2000s.
