Peter C. Bernet , actually Curt Heinz Peter Bernet , (born October 28, 1931 in Darmstadt-Bessungen ; † July 10, 2016 in Darmstadt-Arheilgen ) was a lawyer and the longest-serving police chief in Germany to date.

Life

Peter C. Bernet grew up with his nine-year younger brother Joachim and his sister Ute in Darmstadt district Bessungen and studied after his schooling at the Ludwig George's School of Law . In 1953 he joined the SPD as a student and was actively involved in social democracy for a long time. The long-time police chief was enthusiastic about art, history, literature, fishing (from 1971 chairman of the Woogsangler ), working in the Lions Club and the Kaupiana Association , and much more. For many years he worked as a lecturer at the administrative seminar in Darmstadt and as chairman of the award committee Kavalier der Straße . In addition to other honorary posts, he founded the first communal prevention council in Hesse together with the former SPD mayor Peter Benz . Bernet was a "sociable, humorous and helpful contemporary who always tackled problems and tasks with determination." The extraordinary commitment in and for many Darmstadt clubs was honored with numerous orders of merit, including the 1994 Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st class . He lived with his wife Erika in Darmstadt-Arheilgen until his death.

job

After successfully completing his law studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the second state examination, Bernet initially practiced as a lawyer in Groß-Gerau and in 1961 switched to the civil service at the Darmstadt Regional Council as a government assessor . In 1963 Peter C. Bernet was appointed head of the then city police by the then mayor Ludwig Engel ; at the age of less than 32, he was the youngest police chief in Germany and, when he left office in 1994, the longest serving. In 1964 he was appointed by the city of Darmstadt to be the officer for fire and disaster control and was now also responsible for the fire brigades and the coordination of the rescue services.

In the thirty-one years of service he had a decisive influence on police work in the city of Darmstadt and after the regional reform in Hesse from 1974 in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district for decades. Bernet stood for a liberal basic line, he relied on de-escalation, conflict avoidance and dialogue with the citizens: the police in the role of friend and helper for the citizen . For these goals he benefited from his closeness to the citizens. After the Schwabing riots in 1962 there were repeated violent clashes between right-wing extremists around the newly strengthened NPD and left-wing democratic counter-demonstrators in Darmstadt at the beginning of his service as early as 1963 . The Darmstadt police strengthened their liberal image here through prudent intervention and tactically skilful behavior.

Peter C. Bernet was particularly committed to establishing traffic education , high-performance fire brigades and drug prevention. In 1996, on his initiative, the drug contact shop scentral was set up together with Peter Benz , and until his death he campaigned for the acquisition of sponsorship money for this facility.

Peter C. Bernet considered the construction of the new police headquarters in Klappacher Strasse to be his life's work , into which he could move himself shortly before his retirement. At the inauguration on March 1, 1993, he demonstrated his profound sense of humor in his celebratory speech regarding the umbrellas in the driveway:

"The umbrellas are like the police: when you need them, they are not there!"
