The working group of German daily newspapers " Kavalier der Straße " in the DVR is an amalgamation of German daily newspapers to promote partnership in road traffic. Upon suggestion, it honors exemplary road users as gentlemen of the road .

organization

31 regional and national daily newspapers are currently united in the working group. The working group is a member of the German Road Safety Council and is under the patronage of the Federal Minister of Transport . There is cooperation with the ADAC and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. Two elected speakers, always a journalist and a publisher, represent the working group externally. The managing director is Gernot Sittner.

history

In 1959, German newspaper publishers initiated the campaign to present exemplary road users to the readers of their newspaper. The Süddeutsche Zeitung , which had already preceded the Kavalier at the wheel a few years earlier , took on a leading role and stated that the aim was “to further spread that knightly spirit, which is expressed in the courtesy and helpfulness of all road users on our roads ".

activity

Since it was founded, more than 65,000 road users have been recognized as the “cavalier of the road”.

With the title “Right of way for safe driving - young people take responsibility”, the “Cavalier of the Road” started a new project for traffic education in schools in spring 2008. It conveys - in a daily newspaper - the topics of road safety and cooperative behavior in road traffic in the classroom. It is supported by the German Road Safety Council, the commercial employers' liability insurance association, with pedagogical support from the IZOP Institute ("Newspaper in School"). Since then, the project has taken place every school year. Every newspaper that is affiliated to the working group can participate.

Distinction Cavalier of the Street

The awardees receive a certificate, a badge of honor and a plaque and are presented in the member newspapers. The cavaliers of the previous year are invited to the annual meeting of the working group. Any road user can suggest anyone else. Reasons for the award are, for example, assistance after traffic accidents, particularly considerate, cooperative behavior in traffic, presence of mind when preventing accidents or preventing accidents from escaping.
