The Vivarium Darmstadt (officially: Zoo Vivarium Darmstadt) is a small zoo in the southern Hessian city and describes itself as Darmstadt's zoo .

History and description

On July 21, 1956, the school vivarium was opened in the orangery garden on the site of the city nursery .

On August 28, 1965, the new vivarium, built according to plans by graduate engineer Rolf Prange, was opened at its current location. It shows over 700 animals belonging to more than 150 species on an area of around four hectares. It is named after the aquarium and terrarium hall, in which, in addition to fish and reptiles, amphibians, insects and other articulated animals are shown.

The vivarium participates in the European Conservation Breeding Programs (EEP) with offspring of various animal species , for example black vultures and small vasa parrots as the world's first breeding program. The zoo's attractions are the animal houses for crested macaques and the tropical house for binturongs (marten bears) and pygmy otters , which opened in 2005 .

There is a walk-in enclosure for Bennett kangaroos (a subspecies of the red-necked wallaby ) and a petting zoo with West African pygmy goats. The Africa House, which was used for chimpanzees until the 1980s, was converted into a tropical house for crocodiles , mouse birds , butterflies and fish and opened in this form in 2011. Opposite it is the walk-in aviary for native waders .

The enclosure for the Seychelles giant tortoises has already been expanded and inaugurated in March 2010. In 2014 the Dr.-Maria-Börsig-Haus was opened, which includes a walk-in outdoor area for Bolivian squirrel monkeys . In 2015, the renovation and enlargement of the tapir enclosure was completed, and a new enclosure for house guinea pigs was built in the petting zoo .

For the future, the zoo is planning to restructure and build numerous other facilities. Considerations are made, for example, regarding the conversion of the aquarium and terrarium hall. In future, the zoo's goal planning is to show visitors the fauna of the southern hemisphere. There will be an increasing concentration on animal species from South America, Africa and Australia.
