The Alabama and Gulf Coast Railway is an American regional railroad company in the states of Florida , Alabama and Mississippi . The company is based in Monroeville, Alabama. The company is owned by RailAmerica .

With 21 locomotives, the company operates a 690 km long route from Pensacola (Florida) to the north via Hybart, Kimbrough, Demopolis (all Alabama) to Columbus (Mississippi) , from where route rights exist over BNSF tracks to Amory (Mississippi). From Kimbrough there are route rights over tracks of the Norfolk Southern to Mobile (Alabama). In Mobile she has her own track systems acquired from the BNSF.

There are transitions to the BNSF in Amory, the Canadian National Railway in Mobile, the CSX in Hybart, Mobile and Cantonment (Florida), the Norfolk Southern in Boligee, Demopolis, Kimbrough and Mobile, and the Kansas City Southern Railway in Mobile (via CN tracks ) and Columbus, to the Columbus and Greenville Railway (CAGY), the Golden Triangle Railroad (GTRA) and the Luxapalilla Valley Railroad (LXVR) in Columbus, to the M&B Railroad in Linden (Alabama) and to the Terminal Railway Alabama State Docks in Mobile .

history

The company began operations on September 22, 1997 on the former 227 km St. Louis - San Francisco Railway line Pensacola - Kimbrough acquired by the BNSF . In January 2002, the company went through the purchase of the former parent company States Rail Inc. by Rail America over to them. With effect from June 1, 2003, the company acquired a further 463 km of route from Amory, Mississippi to Mobile, Alabama, for USD 15 million from the BNSF, including the necessary route usage rights over Norfolk Southern tracks. The BNSF still has route rights to Kimbrough.
