history
Swedish migrants founded Augustana College and Theological Seminary in north Chicago in 1860 . Initially, leaders were trained there for the new Swedish churches and youth in these communities. Because the Civil War had reduced both faculties and students, both the college and seminary moved to Paxton, Illinois in 1863. In 1875 both institutions moved to Rock Island, Illinois. The Theological Seminary separated from Augustana College in 1948 and returned to Chicago in 1967.
