Helen Caldicott
Helen Caldicott (born August 7, 1938 in Melbourne as Helen Broinowski ) is an Australian doctor, book author and well-known nuclear opponent and peace activist.
Through her book publications, media appearances and the formation of several alliances against the manufacture and proliferation of nuclear weapons , Caldicott gained international recognition.
Life
Beginnings
Caldicott received his PhD from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1961 . After working at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston , she taught pediatrics at Harvard Medical School from 1977 to 1978 . At the time of the Cold War and the international arms race , Caldicott retired in 1980 and has since turned to her work as an anti-nuclear weapon activist.

As early as 1971, Caldicott was one of the initiators of the Australian protests against French nuclear weapons tests in the Pacific . She was a co-founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility , an association of over 20,000 doctors and professors with the aim of educating people about the risks of the use of nuclear energy and nuclear weapons at their universities. She was also involved in the founding of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War . In 2001 she founded the Nuclear Policy Research Institute in Washington, DC with the aim of doing public relations work. Caldicott is a global speaker and has published several books. Her sixth book, The New Nuclear Danger: George W. Bush's Military Industrial Complex , attracted particular attention because it criticized President George W. Bush harshly. Her letter campaign in 2003 also had great media interest. It called for people to write to John Paul II so that he could travel to Baghdad as a living shield .
Helen Caldicott has often been the subject of documentaries. The documentary film If You Love This Planet with and about them won an Oscar , but was rejected by the US government as a political propaganda film. Caldicott has received numerous awards and honors. In 1979 she received the Thomas Merton Award for Peace and Social Justice.
