The organization IPPNW (abbreviation for International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War; name of the German section IPPNW Germany - International Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War, Doctors in Social Responsibility ) is an international association of human, animal and Dentists who, among other things, advocate the disarmament of nuclear weapons .

The international headquarters are located in Somerville, Massachusetts . In 1985 the organization received the Nobel Peace Prize for its "knowledgeable and important information work" which raised awareness among the population of the "catastrophic consequences of a nuclear war".

The German section (based in Berlin) is the largest professional peace organization in Germany with around 8,000 members .

history

The history of the IPPNW began in 1980, during a tense phase of the Cold War , with an exchange of letters between the Soviet cardiologist Yevgeny Tschasow and his American colleague Bernard Lown . A few months later, they and four other doctors from the USA and the Soviet Union founded the Organization for the Prevention of Nuclear War in Geneva . In the following years international sections were founded, in the spring of 1982 in the FRG and the GDR . One of the founding members of the West German section was the Giessen psychoanalyst Horst-Eberhard Richter . A prominent member of the East German section was the Berlin urologist Moritz Mebel . In 1984 the IPPNW received the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education , and in 1985 the Nobel Peace Prize .

The organization was an active part of the international peace movement as early as the 1980s . In the spring of 2003, IPPNW-Germany warned of the consequences and effects of the Iraq war on people and on international law . IPPNW-Germany explained the background of the war waged by the USA against the overwhelming will of the international community .

Since 1991 the IPPNW has awarded the Clara Immerwahr award “to people who, despite personal disadvantages, stand up against war, armaments and for human rights”.

In 1996 the IPPNW organized the international congress Medicine and Conscience in Nuremberg - 50 years after the Nuremberg medical trial .

aims

The organization advocates averting damage to mankind across the globe, and would like to do this for the future of all people and across all political boundaries and social systems . In doing so, she proceeds in the sense of preventive medicine and tries to prevent risks to life and health. Where people are already in need, medical ethics dictate that they help, so their claim. In the three-step process of anamnesis - diagnosis - therapy , the IPPNW takes measures to recognize, prevent or alleviate suffering , for example in acute crisis areas . "Our task as doctors is to avert any threat to life and health," is the motto of the IPPNW.

The IPPNW researches the facts and backgrounds of the health, social and political effects and causes of wars and armed conflicts . It publishes studies, books and brochures on the health consequences of nuclear threats, causes and consequences of war, and war prevention. She also advises political decision-makers and scientists. She contributes her medical knowledge at peace conferences and in the media. The IPPNW addresses the public at events and through media work. It informs the population about the dangers of civil and military use of nuclear energy and about the consequences, political background and health effects of wars.

The IPPNW has long criticized the 50-year-old agreement between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). In this agreement, the IAEA has primary responsibility for all nuclear research projects. In the opinion of the IPPNW, the IAEA prevents the WHO from unrestricted reporting on health risks from radiation. The health consequences of Chernobyl , the subject of two major UN conferences in Geneva in 1995 and Kiev in 2001, would not be made available to the public. After the Fukushima nuclear disaster , the IPPNW again demanded the termination of the agreement between WHO and IAEA.

Memberships

In 2009, IPPNW was one of the founders of the International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons .

IPPNW Germany is a member of the Grüner Strom Label , which awards the seal of quality of the same name for green electricity offers. She is also one of the participating organizations of the Free Gaza movement .

Clara Forever Award

The Germany section of the IPPNW donated the Clara Immerwahr award in 1991. It honors people who, regardless of personal disadvantages, have actively campaigned against war, armaments and other threats to the foundations of human life in their profession, at their workplace.
