In the 2004/05 season he had played nine games (1 goal) by the middle of the season, but Sir Alex Ferguson decided to loan him out to allow him more match practice. He returned to Manchester at the beginning of the 2005/06 season in hopes of becoming a regular. He made his breakthrough when he represented the injured Gabriel Heinze as a left-back. He then returned to midfield, where he played some good games. He played 36 times in that season and scored six goals. In the 2006/07 season he got his assignments mostly in the League Cup or the FA Cup. In July 2007, Richardson moved to Sunderland AFC for £ 5.5million (€ 8.2million) . There he signed a four-year contract.
