Naming

The street is named after the Miss Columbia airplane , with which Clarence D. Chamberlin set a long-distance record on a flight from New York to Mansfeld near Eisleben in June 1927 . The street, which was called Prinz-August-von-Württemberg-Straße since 1898 and a section from before 1901 to around 1919 was called Kirchhofstraße and then Friedhofstraße , was renamed Columbiastraße in 1929 . It got its current name in 1950.

time of the nationalsocialism

At the time of National Socialism , the Gestapo opened a prison camp in the Columbiahaus in 1933, known as KZ Columbia or KZ Columbia-Haus. A memorial on Columbiadamm at the corner of Golßener Strasse has been a reminder of this since 1994 .
