Photovoltaic systems and greenery on the ufaFabrik site

The ufaFabrik is a self-managed cultural and life project in the Berlin district of Tempelhof , on the site of the former film copying plant of the Aktiengesellschaft für Filmfabrikation (AFIFA), a UFA subsidiary. A community of around 40 people lives there today and runs cultural and social projects as well as various crafts and a school. There are around 200 workplaces on the 18,566 m² site.

The ufaFabrik is also known nationwide through regular events in the cultural sector, but also because it is one of the first socio-cultural centers that tried to "implement a new form of cultural work in order to create alternatives to the existing cultural institutions."

Location and infrastructure

Green roof in the ufaFabrik

The ufaFabrik site is located on the banks of the Teltow Canal south of Viktoriastraße and west of the Stubenrauchbrücke, over which the Tempelhofer Damm runs. The Ullsteinstraße underground station is also in the immediate vicinity under the northern part of the Stubenrauchbrücke, the Ullsteinhaus and Tempelhofer Hafen are to the east.

There are numerous facilities on the site: a children's farm and a playground, a free school, a health food store, an organic bakery and pastry shop, various halls and studios (variety theater, Wolfgang Neuss salon, Studio 1, dance studio, theater, martial arts dojo ), an open-air theater, the international cultural center, a guest house, a café and a children's circus school. The Neighborhood and Self-Help Center (NUSZ) is also an association for local activities. There run u. a. Projects for the involvement of young people from the area in order to get them off the street or to give them help.

The energy supply is largely decentralized with a block-type thermal power station and a photovoltaic system with a peak output of around 70 kW; the necessary electricity is also obtained from the power grid in the form of green electricity . Most of the roofs are green .

history

The site

AFIFA was located on the site with a copy plant. It was initially independent, later a subsidiary of UFA , and was liquidated in 1956. As part of the traffic planning of the " World Capital Germania " project of the Nazis , the third ring (one of the traffic rings around the center of Berlin ) should run directly southwest of today's ufaFabrik site. There are drawings by the architect Otto Kohtz for this planning in the architecture museum of the TU Berlin.

The commune

From around 1972 a commune developed in Berlin , which in 1976 moved into the factory for culture, sports and handicrafts on two floors in Schöneberger Kurfürstenstrasse . Due to the many activities and members, however, a larger area was soon required. However , an area in Kreuzberg with the Prakma-Maschinenfabrik GmbH buildings at Waldemarstrasse 55 was torn down while the efforts were being made to move there. Later the area in Tempelhof was visited. It was decided to first occupy the site and then submit an application for use.

On June 9, 1979, the area was peacefully occupied by the municipality. At the time, the site belonged to the Deutsche Bundespost , which was in negotiations to sell the site to the Berlin Senate . The occupation was not carried out by barricading, as was usual up to now, but the area was open and a banner with a “Warm welcome” was emblazoned above the entrance. After about three weeks of intensive public relations work and negotiations with the Berlin Senate, a right to stay was obtained, and about 40 people have lived permanently on the site since then. After violent clashes between the police and the occupiers in the autumn of 1980, the then SPD Interior Senator Peter Ulrich opted for a “line of reason.” A first lease was negotiated, which was initially limited to three years; rents or leases are paid regularly.

The following CDU Senate under Richard von Weizsäcker served this toleration "as a figurehead for an open cultural policy."

On the political side, there was initially hope that the occupiers would leave by themselves due to the cold and the defective heating, but that did not happen. As early as 1979, the first combined heat and power plant for generating energy was operated on the site. It was a so-called "Mao-Diesel", a converted truck engine with 30  kW electrical and 60 kW thermal output. From 1980 the roofs were planted (4000 m² by 2003) and the facades were planted.

The residents and neighbors established many sporting and social activities permanently on the site. In 1981 the former UFA cinema was restored, equipped with new technology and opened as the only cinema in Berlin-Tempelhof at the time. There were legal disputes with parts of the former UFA film company, particularly over the name of the cinema, so that the name of the cinema changed several times: it was called, for example, Ufer Palast or UFO Kino or, finally, a judicial order UFA Palast . In 1982 the first Berlin open-air cinema was opened, in which Willy Sommerfeld, among others, accompanied silent films live on the piano. In 1986 the two small film studios UFO 2 and UFO 3 opened in converted former dubbing studios. In 1987 the Neighborhood and Self-Help Center (NUSZ) was founded with the support of the Berlin Senate.

In 1989 the cinema was closed in the cinema. Converted into a variety salon, the former cinema has been used for events since 1990. In 1994 a large gas-powered combined heat and power plant with 84 kW electrical and 180 kW thermal output was installed, with which the heating and shower water heating for the entire site are operated. The rainwater has also been used since then. Heating and ventilation have been linked via a computer-controlled building management system since 1995 , and a 1 kW wind turbine has also been installed.

The first part of the photovoltaic system , planned by ETA, was connected to the grid in 1997 with over 50 kW, in 1999 the second part, planned and built by Solon AG , with a further 20 kW, distributed over twelve different systems for the scientific testing of different module types and tracking .

In 1999 there was an increased focus on sustainable development ; From 2000 onwards, together with the Technical University of Berlin , and later also with the district office, work was carried out on a sustainable concept for the renovation of the Tempelhof harbor; the work has received several awards.

Culture and events

The ufaFabrik offers numerous opportunities for culture and relaxation all year round. A stage program is offered that ranges from theater, cabaret , variety , music, to children's circus and family programs . Two restored event halls, multifunctional stages with 180 or 350 seats, as well as the covered summer stage in the countryside with 500 seats with appropriate catering are available.

In the guest house there are inexpensive rooms available for overnight stays.

A festival that has been held regularly at the ufaFabrik since 1997 is the Jazz Meeting Berlin . The most famous event is the ufaFabrik Boulevard where alternative artists and musicians give shows and concerts over several days.

The three tornadoes come from this environment. Arnulf Rating became known here. Wolfgang Neuss celebrated his comeback here in the 1980s.

At the same time, the cultural center fulfills functions for the Tempelhof district. In her dissertation, Heike Summerer comes to the conclusion that the opening of the ufaFabrik "certainly contributed to the positive development of the district", as it "decidedly expanded the cultural leisure opportunities there." a few hundred brave citizens in their own hands, ”said the mirror in the year of the occupation.
