Arnulf Rating (born October 10, 1951 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German cabaret artist . He lives and works in Berlin .

Arnulf Rating grew up in Wuppertal and studied mathematics and physics in Münster and Berlin. In 1977 he founded Die 3 Tornados in Berlin together with Günter Thews , to which he belonged until its dissolution in 1990.

In 1990 Rating appeared together with Matthias Beltz , Achim Konejung , Heinrich Pachl and Horst Schroth in the Reichspolterabend . In 1992, the same line-up was followed by the Reichspolterabend II and in 1994 the Reichspolterabend III (radio and TV recordings). Together with Pachl, in 1992 he brought out the program Where Others Pray .

Arnulf Rating has been on tour with solo programs since 1993. Even if he occasionally dresses up for individual numbers, his stage presence is usually characterized by appearing in a suit with a briefcase. During the program, he takes a stack of newspapers from the suitcase, mostly the Bild newspaper , and uses particularly striking headlines to comment on current affairs.

In addition to his work as a cabaret artist, Arnulf Rating is active as an organizer of numerous events.

In 1980 he helped found the Tempodrom event tent in Berlin, which he named. The Tempodrom was planned as a guest performance and meeting place and as a place for revues of a new crossover culture, a combination of E and U culture. Since 1995 he has been campaigning for a permanent house in the city center in the “New Tempodrom Foundation” instead of the tent construction threatened by the government move. After the completion and opening of the Tempodrom building at the Anhalter Bahnhof , he organized the Maulhelden Festival in 2002, 2003 and 2004 as an international festival of word art. Since then, all event activities have been handled by the Arnulf Ratings Maulhelden office.

In 1990 the “ Quartier Latin Berlin ” opened on Potsdamer Strasse as the first large variety theater in Berlin after World War II. In 1990 Rating started the “Blue Monday” series there as a “living city revue”. From 2003 continued in the Tempodrom, from 2005 in the tipi at the Chancellery and since 2014 in the specially converted cabaret theater Die Wühlmäuse . The 200th Blue Monday took place there on June 17, 2019. Guests of the Blue Monday were u. a. Wiglaf Droste , Georg Schramm , Kay Ray , Cindy from Marzahn , Dieter Nuhr , Funny van Dannen , Fil, Horst Evers , Pigor & Eichhorn , Rebecca Carrington , HW Olm and the GlasBlasSingQuintett .

In 2004 he exported the principle to Frankfurt / Oder. Right on the border, "Der Blaue Wednesday" has been giving several times a year in the KleistForum, with increasing success, an insight into what is raging on Berlin-Brandenburg stages or what is blooming in secret. The changing artists and musicians have the moderator Arnulf Rating drive for the show by bus from Berlin to the Oder.

Since 2005, Arnulf Rating has organized and moderated the Political Ash Wednesday Berlin , to which he invites cabaret colleagues. Always top-class, in recent years Dieter Hildebrandt, Simone Solga, Rainald Grebe, Lisa Fitz, Marc-Uwe Kling, Alfons, Max Uthoff, Urban Priol, Florian Schröder, Anny Hartmann, Serdar Somuncu, Wilfried Schmickler and Georg Schramm have taken part . In 2007 he appeared with Volker Pispers , Matthias Deutschmann , Hagen Rether and Martina Schwarzmann in the cabaret Sampler: 3rd Political Ash Wednesday live in the Arena Berlin , the CD of the same name was released in the same year. Arnulf Rating received the most important German cabaret awards and can be seen regularly in many cabaret programs on German television.

He has been an author and member of the medium's advisory board since 2017, when the Rubikon blog was founded .
