Salvator Church

The Catholic Salvatorkirche , the rectory and the former Christophorus Children's Hospital are located at Briesingstrasse 6 at the corner of Pfarrer-Lütkehaus-Platz 1 in the Berlin district of Lichtenrade in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . The listed building ensemble was built in 1930–1933 by Josef Bischof based on a design by Bernhard Hertel from 1920 and converted from 1954–1956 under the direction of Heinrich Kosina . The New Objectivity continues to have an effect in the architectural style , with reminiscences of the southern German baroque .

history

The beginnings of the Catholic parish in Lichtenrade after the Reformation began in 1912. A chapel in the house at Bahnhofstrasse 8 served as a place of worship . The pastor of the parish of St. Elisabeth in Schöneberg planned to set up a children's hospital nearby, first after Salvator and later after the saint Christophorus was named. A Catholic church with a rectory should be added to this. Bernhard Hertel submitted the building plans for the church in 1920 , but because the financial means were lacking, only an emergency church was built between 1924 and 1925 , which was converted into a medical center in 1933 . After Bernhard Hertel's death, Josef Bischof took over the project. The children's hospital was built in 1930–1933. The foundation stone of the church was laid on August 1, 1932. For financial reasons, only the choir and the two adjoining yokes could be completed. The future parish church was therefore not consecrated on February 5, 1933, but only assigned. The branch church of St. Elisabeth was named Salvator. The small community became a curate on March 31, 1937 and an independent parish on October 1, 1940 . Heinrich Kosina did not add the missing building wings until 1955–1956.

On April 1, 1966, a daughter congregation was founded by Salvator, and from 1975–1977 the Church of the Holy Martyrs of Africa was built for her. With effect from March 1, 2004, the parish of To the Holy Martyrs of Africa will be merged with Salvator, so that in Lichtenrade there is again only the Catholic parish of Salvator.

Building description

Josef Bischof designed the building ensemble based on the architecture of the homeland security . The masonry buildings are uniformly faced with red clinker bricks. The hall church has two aisles. The four-bay central nave is closed with a five-eighth choir . The tower is attached to the side on a square floor plan , of which a low corridor runs along the wall of the central nave on the north side. The flat, barrel-vaulted central nave opens up on the south side behind an arcade to a windowless vaulted aisle, above which is the gallery , which was intended for the hospital's patients. The pillars of the arcade are decorated with pilasters , baroque capitals and cornices , as are those of the triumphal arch . The grisaille-colored windows are framed with light edging made of sandstone, a contrast to the deep red clinker bricks of the wall surfaces, characteristic of Westphalian baroque churches. In the walls of the nave they are segmental arches , but on four sides of the choir they are elongated, and semicircular above and below. There is a circular window above each. The nave is covered with a hipped roof, the side aisle with a pent roof . In 1946 the side entrance was closed and a portal was built on the gable end of the nave. In 1955 the expansion of the church began and after completion it was consecrated on March 19, 1956.

Peal

In 1946 the bell tower was expanded. It has the shape of an onion dome . Its almost windowless tower shaft has a retracted bell house in which a ring of three bronze bells hangs:

Furnishing

Most of the original equipment has been preserved. The interior is modeled on the South German Baroque , such as the high altar with its high columns . The altarpiece of Salvator Mundi in the Nazarene- influenced art style comes from Gebhard Fugel . The baroque paintings to the left and right of the chancel depict Saint Hedwig and Saint Anthony and date from the 17th century. The baptismal font dates from the middle of the 18th century. The originally present Harmonium in 1948 by the main work of the organ removed. In 1963 Salvator received an organ from Orgelbau Romanus Seifert & Sohn .
