Teltow Canal Route

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Teltow Canal Route (RSV 6) is a planned rapid cycle connection in Berlin . It should extend over a total length of about 10.5 kilometers and run through the districts of Lichterfelde , Lankwitz , Steglitz and the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . The route is to run from the Brandenburg state border in Zehlendorf along the Teltow Canal and from the southern end along the route of the S-Bahn lines S2 and S25 to the north of the Südkreuz station . A continuation to the Mitte district is also being examined .

According to the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, construction is to begin in 2022. The planning phase is expected to be 30 months and the construction time 18 months. Completion is expected in 2024, although delays can be expected due to possible lawsuits against trees to be felled or parking spaces that are no longer available and residents' protests.

The planned costs were estimated by the responsible company infraVelo at "five million euros, plus or minus 40 percent", whereby the budget is not limited according to information from January 2019.

According to infraVelo, cyclists should save a third of their travel time through the route alone on the section between Lichterfelde Süd and Südkreuz. It is estimated that the rapid cycle connection will replace 1,800 car journeys with bicycles every day.

In 2017, 30 so-called 'route corridors' were identified in Berlin that could be suitable for the construction of cycle superhighways. Investigations into concrete possible courses were started for ten of these routes. According to § 45 of the 2018 from the Berlin House of Representatives decided Mobility Act , are to be built in Berlin Radschnellverbindungen with a total length of at least a hundred kilometers. The state-owned company infraVelo was founded for the implementation . The engineering office SHP was chosen for the planning . The Teltow Canal route is to be implemented as the first rapid cycle path. A corridor ten kilometers long and two kilometers wide was examined for its construction.

On January 31, 2019, the Senator for Transport Regine Günther and Thomas Richter from the responsible planning office in Schöneberg Town Hall presented the feasibility study. Part of the event was a dialogue between around 120 citizens and interested parties and the responsible specialist planning office about a possible course of the route. The suggestions made there are to be included in the further planning. The completion of the feasibility studies was dated mid-2019.

Route areas

Sections and route variants

The probable route was divided from south to north into the following four areas or sections:

  • Area 1: riverside path
  • Area 2: Teltow Canal - Arnulfstrasse
  • Area 3: Priesterweg / Hans-Baluschek-Park
  • Area 4: Südkreuz and connection

Some sections of the route, such as the section through Heinrich-von-Kleist-Park , are already sufficiently developed for integration into the rapid cycle connection. There, however, pedestrian traffic has priority, which, according to the ADFC , would lead to "that there are always conflicts". For further sections, cobblestone paths are to be paved and bicycle roads leading through residential streets (e.g. between Albrechtstrasse and Insulaner ) are to be established. The latter is under criticism because of the expected obstruction of bicycle traffic by motorized traffic. In some parts it is planned to run the route along roads. The ADFC rejects this and would like a separate route for cycling.

One of the planning challenges is the location of the Südkreuz train station, which breaks through the route and was built without sufficient space for bicycle traffic. The station will probably have to be bypassed for the route. Since 2018, Deutsche Bahn no longer tolerated passage through the building, which had previously been used as a connection between the existing cycle paths through Hans-Baluschek-Park south of the building and the railway line to the Monumentenbrücke on the other side.

Implementation stages

The Berlin rapid cycle connections are to be implemented in six stages. These are scheduled for the Teltow Canal route as follows:

  1. Potential investigation
  2. Feasibility study (by mid-2019)
  3. Draft planning
  4. Planning procedure
  5. Start of construction (planned for 2022)
  6. Opening (planned for 2024)

The ADFC criticizes the process as "overly complicated". Since several suitable sections of the route are already available, another time-consuming search for alternatives is unnecessary and instead the search for connections to the city center makes sense, as has not yet been planned.
