The imperial oak in the Berlin district of Friedenau , protected as a natural monument, was planted by Gustav Schenk in honor of the German Emperor Wilhelm I on the occasion of his golden wedding anniversary with his wife Augusta and his 82nd birthday on March 22, 1879. At the time, Schenk was the publisher of what was then the Royal Secret Oberhof Buchdruckerei and one of the first settlers in Friedenau. The tree came from the Dreilinden tree nursery of Prince Friedrich Karl . The originally planted oak had to be replaced in November 1883 because it had been badly damaged in protest against the socialist laws.
renaming
The place where the oak stands has also been popularly known as the Imperial Oak since 1879 . Previously it was called the Rondell . There are no imperial oaks in the official street directories , the square is not officially dedicated. However, the BVG bus stop in the immediate vicinity of the traffic island is called that. A subway station planned at the time for subway line 10 planned there in the 1960s was also to receive this name. The taxi rank on the corner of Rheinstrasse and Moselstrasse is called "Kaisereiche".
Anniversary celebration 2004
On September 19, 2004, the imperial oak was the focus of a birthday party. She had "survived two wars and traffic in Berlin in her 125 years" (quote). The "jubilarian" was actually only 121 years old, because the original tree had already been replaced after four years (see above).
As a birthday present, Franz-Friedrich Prince of Prussia unveiled a brass plaque and a historic street sign was inaugurated.
