La Ferte-Alais is a French municipality with 3800 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Essonne in the region of Ile-de-France ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Étampes and is the administrative seat of the canton of Mennecy .
location
The municipality is located in the Gâtinais français Regional Nature Park . The neighboring municipalities of La Ferté-Alais are Boutigny-sur-Essonne and Cerny .
history
The town's previous name was La Ferté-Baudouin . Ferté comes from Firmitas , fortress, Alais by the first name Adélaïde and refers to a castle lady of the 11th century.
