The Catholic parish church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption in La Ferté-Alais , a French parish in the Essonne department in the Île-de-France region , is one of the early Gothic churches. The church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin was added to the list of architectural monuments in France in 1862 as Monument historique .

history

Notre-Dame de l'Assomption dates back to a Romanesque church from the late 11th century, of which the foundation walls are still preserved. The church was a priory of the nearby Benedictine Abbey of Morigny , whose abbot Thouin had a cloister built in La Ferté-Alais in the first half of the 12th century and probably also had the church renovated. The bell tower with its stone top was completed towards the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century.

architecture

inner space

On the outer wall a runs under the roof approach Fries of cantilevers that are carved with human figures and animal heads.

The interior consists of a single nave with three bays and a transept, the arms of which open to a chapel in the east. The one-bay choir closes with a semicircular apse . It is illuminated by two rows of windows one above the other. The nave and transept were covered with a wooden ceiling in the 11th century. Before the middle of the 12th century, the originally four-bay nave, whose buttresses can still be seen on the outer wall, was divided into three bays and raised. In the 12th century, it was covered with a ribbed vault, which is supported on the outside by powerful buttresses. Inside, the ribs of the vault rest on pillars with pillars. The capitals of the columns are decorated with foliage.

The choir and the chapel of the south transept are equipped with leaded glass windows. One window in the transept chapel dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and shows Mary , whose body is pierced by seven swords, with the body of Jesus. Another window also shows a representation of Mary. Mary is surrounded by her symbols such as the sun and moon, sealed spring, fountain, sea star, rose, lily, mirror, temple and tower.

On the central choir window Mary is depicted with the baby Jesus . The smaller window above shows a pelican which, symbolic of the sacrificial death of Jesus, nourishes its young with its own blood. The apostle Peter is depicted on the left, the French King Louis the Saint on the right , wearing Christ's crown of thorns on a pillow .

Furnishing

  • The bench for the church council was restored in the 19th century and is made up of parts from the 17th and early 18th centuries. It consists of four seats and is decorated with angel heads.
  • The altar has wood-carved relief panels from the 18th century. In the middle Mary is shown with the baby Jesus, on the left Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist , on the right St. Joseph and St. Anna .
  • The inner door of the church is provided with carved wood relief panels, which are dated to the 16th century. They depict Jesus and the twelve apostles .
