Louis Grodecki

Louis Grodecki (born July 18, 1910 in Warsaw , † March 28, 1982 in Paris ) was a French art historian and author of Polish descent, who is still an important expert on Romanesque stained glass .

Life

After graduating from high school, he went to Berlin in 1928 to study directing with Erwin Piscator . In the same year he went to Paris, where he switched from theater to art history in 1929 . He studied with Henri Focillon from 1929 and graduated in 1933 with a diploma. In 1935 he took French citizenship.

In 1949, Louis Grodecki met Erwin Panofsky at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton . Louis Grodecki specialized more and more in glass painting and became one of the most important connoisseurs of Romanesque leaded glass windows .

In 1977 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .
