Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church

The Protestant Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church at Rackebüller Weg 64 in the Berlin district of Lichtenrade in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district is part of a community center that was built by Werner Foth and Joachim Darge in 1955–1956 and expanded in the 1970s.

history

When new settlements were built in the north of the old village of Lichtenrade, primarily for resettlers , the parish decided in spring 1955 to build a refugee pastoral care and community center on the church's own property, which also had enough rooms for the confirmation lessons , for the parsonage and a day-care center should contain. The originally planned two-storey building was dropped in view of the development plan because the church should not stand out from the surrounding single-family houses . Only the bell tower built in 1958 , a steel lattice tower , is an exception. The foundation stone was laid on September 11, 1955, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on January 9, 1956 and the church was consecrated on December 16, 1956 . Dietrich Bonhoeffer was elected as the namesake on May 29, 1960 .

Building description

The originally built hall church , a masonry structure , has a rectangular floor plan . It has large lattice windows facing the street and is covered with a flat gable roof, which is also visible from the inside. The altar cross , the candlesticks and the baptismal font were created in 1956 by Waldemar Otto . In 1963 the church received colored windows designed by Willy Rakuttis.

The interior was heavily rebuilt in 1965 by Günter Kohlhaus. The church hall received a suspended ceiling made of wood. The sanctuary received a new altar , a new baptismal font and a new pulpit . The old wooden gallery at the back was removed and a new one was built on the side in exposed concrete .

In 1975 the building was converted into a basilica , with two side aisles being added to the hall , which can be separated from the central nave by doors if necessary, as well as a choir with an adjacent sacristy . The side gallery was removed again and a new one was built above the entrance, on which the previous organ positive of the village church Lichtenrade was placed after it had received a new organ .

Two steps lead to a dais , on which stands the altar . A large copper relief on the wall to the right of the altar shows the Lord's Supper , in front of which is the baptismal font. The altar wall was given a colored window.

In the course of an extensive renovations 1985, the corrugated plates was fiber cement existing roof covering by copper sheet replaced.

The bell chamber of the steel campanile was given a new shell .

The bronze bell consisting of three bells was produced by the Rincker bell and art foundry on March 17, 1958.
