The Burmester Audio Systems GmbH is a German manufacturer of audio components. The company, based in Berlin-Schöneberg , was founded in 1977 by Dieter Burmester .

history

Burmester, a musician from a very early age, saw his goal in reproducing music as naturally and unadulterated as possible through his audio components and speakers.

The first device arose from the necessity of a defective preamplifier. Since the products offered on the market did not meet his requirements, he built his own 777 preamplifier from parts for medical devices that he manufactured in his own engineering office at the time. Burmester Audiosysteme GmbH was founded in 1978. Since the 777 was unexpectedly successful, Burmester wanted to bring the first hi-fi power amplifier with symmetrical signal routing onto the market. This was a novelty for the hi-fi world, which is why it was initially difficult to convince journalists and dealers of this product.

In 1980, Burmester developed and produced the world's first modular preamplifier, the 808 .

Further milestones are the fully symmetrical signal processing used for the first time in 1983, the DC-coupled signal path from the pickup system to the loudspeaker published in 1987 and the remote-controlled volume control via a relay circuit developed in the same year.

In 1991 the company was one of the first manufacturers to bring out a CD player with a belt drive. Burmester has also had speakers in its range since 1994/95, with Air Motion Transformers being used as tweeters and the chassis for the midrange being unusually large with a diameter of 17 cm. Also in 1994 Burmester built a universal solution for cleaning the mains supply.

The manufacturer now also offers in-wall speakers and a complete system.

The chrome design characteristic of the manufacturer was introduced as early as 1978, which was copied many times and found its way to the Museum of Modern Art in New York .

Four product lines are offered: Classic Line, Top Line, Reference Line and Signature Line.

To this day, all devices are developed in Berlin, manufactured by hand and sold to dealers in around 50 countries on 5 continents. The majority of the components are sourced from Germany. Burmester Audiosysteme GmbH is a member of the German Manufactory Initiative.

After Dieter Burmester's death, the company was continued by his widow Marianne Burmester. Andreas Henke took over the operational management of Burmester Audiosysteme GmbH on January 1, 2017.

Burmester has also been developing hi-fi systems for vehicles since 2003.

The company started with a sound system for the Bugatti Veyron .

With the introduction of the Porsche Panamera in 2009, the Burmester High End Surround Sound System was introduced as optional sound equipment at Porsche . In the following years, a Burmester system was also included in the surcharge list for the remaining models. The development partnership between Burmester and Mercedes-Benz also started in 2009 . Together they developed two new audio systems, especially for the S-Class . Further sound systems for the C-Class , V-Class , E-Class and G-Class followed in the years that followed . The partnership also creates sound systems for the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Mercedes- Maybach S-Class .

Burmester's sound systems at Porsche and Mercedes offer three different basic settings: Pure, Smooth and Live. The 3D mode is currently available for the Mercedes S-Class and E-Class and for the Porsche Panamera.
