The Nollendorfstraße is a residential and shopping street in Berlin's district of Schöneberg , which was created in the late 19th century. Often it is just called the Nolle .
history
Nollendorfstrasse was one of the Schöneberg streets that the Hobrecht development plan established. It was given the same name in 1864, as was Nollendorfplatz in memory of the battle of 1813 near Kulm and Nollendorf in the Sudetenland. The street is close to the so-called “ General Train ”, whose streets and squares are named after generals and battles of the Wars of Liberation 1813–1815.
Structure and sights
The section between Eisenacher Strasse and Maaßenstrasse is a zone that can be used by cars with small cafes, hairdressing salons and restaurants, while the section from Maaßenstrasse to Zietenstrasse is a pedestrian zone dominated by apartment buildings . In this section there are trees and a street fountain in the middle of the street, which is very unusual.
There is a student dormitory at Nollendorfstraße 21a , which was extensively renovated and converted by the beginning of 2013.
At number 37 (corner building on Maaßenstraße) there is a residential building under monument protection .
At the house at Nollendorfstrasse 17 there is a memorial plaque for the British writer Christopher Isherwood , who lived here for a few years. The musical Cabaret Berlin was created based on motifs from two of his novels .
Stumbling blocks were also laid in the street .
