German trotting derby
The German Trotter Derby is a trotting race for three-year-old domestic horses over 1900 meters. It is a Group I race for which the horses qualify in the heats. It was held for the first time on May 23, 1895. Since 1954 it has been held annually on the first Sunday in August on the Mariendorf harness racing track in Berlin .
Another Group I trotting race in Germany was the elite race in Gelsenkirchen that was held until 2005 .
The endowment of the Trotter Derby is based on the stakes paid by the horse owners. In 2017, the endowment for the final was 249,408 euros, with the winner receiving around half of the prize money. The drivers “Hänschen” Frömming and Robert Großmann were the most successful , they each won the German Trotting Derby eleven times.
