The state elections in Saarland in 1994 took place on October 16, 1994 . The election was originally planned for January 1995, but ultimately took place together with the 1994 federal election and the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia . The SPD lost votes, but continued to provide a sole government .

initial situation

In the state elections in 1990 , Prime Minister Lafontaine, who had been in office since 1985, was able to expand the absolute majority of the SPD's mandate and achieved the best result of his party at the time in this state. The CDU and FDP remained in opposition.

Top candidates

The incumbent Prime Minister Oskar Lafontaine ran for the SPD . The top candidate of the CDU was again Klaus Töpfer .

Result

The sole ruling SPD lost five percentage points and lost the absolute majority of votes with 49.4%, but was able to maintain its absolute majority in mandate. The CDU remained the second strongest party and gained 5.2 percentage points and three seats. Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen achieved a total of 5.5% with gains of almost three percentage points and received three mandates; they were represented in the Saarland state parliament for the first time. The FDP / DPS lost 3.5 percentage points and, with 2.1%, was no longer represented in the state parliament for the first time since 1970. With 1.4% after 3.4% in 1990, the Republicans clearly failed to make it into the state parliament.

The voter turnout increased slightly from 83.2% to 83.5%.
