The state election in Thuringia in 1994 was the second election to the Thuringian state parliament since the fall of the Wall . It took place on October 16, 1994 together with the 1994 federal election and the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saarland .

To the initial situation

In the state election in Thuringia in 1990 , the CDU narrowly missed an absolute majority of the seats. She had formed a coalition with the FDP . The state parliament elected Josef Duchač (CDU) as prime minister . Duchač resigned on January 23, 1992 after allegations by the Stasi; Bernhard Vogel (CDU) was elected Prime Minister on February 5 .

Mathematically, three coalitions were possible: CDU-SPD, SPD-PDS and CDU-PDS. A red-red coalition was out of the question for the SPD at the time. The previous Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel formed a grand coalition (CDU-SPD) and remained Prime Minister.
