Kurt Conrad (born October 19, 1911 in Homburg ; † July 16, 1982 ibid) was a German SPD politician .

biography

education and profession

Conrad, who was of Protestant faith, worked as a foreman until 1940 after an apprenticeship as a mechanic. From 1940 he took part as a soldier in the Second World War, towards the end of which he was taken prisoner of war. After the war he worked as an administrative clerk at the city of Homburg. He later became an alderman for social affairs and housing in the city. Most recently he was also the managing mayor until 1956. In 1955 he was also the publishing director for the Saarbrücker Allgemeine Zeitung .

Political party

During the League of Nations, Conrad belonged to the SPD in the Saar area from 1929 to 1935. After the war and the re-approval of democratic parties in Saarland, he was initially a member of the Saarland Social Democratic Party . In 1952 he took part in the founding of the illegal SPD state association in Saarland (all parties that spoke out in favor of the reintegration of the Saarland into Germany were banned until 1955) and became its state chairman (until 1970). When the SPD was approved as the “German Social Democratic Party” in 1955, he also officially appeared for them and participated in the voting campaign on the side of the “Heimatschutz parties ” (SPD, CDU and DPS ).

MP

Conrad was a member of the Saarland state parliament from 1947 to 1952, 1955 to 1957 and 1960 to 1975 . From 1961 to 1970 and 1971 to 1973 he was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there. From 1957 until his resignation on July 20, 1959, Conrad was a member of the German Bundestag , where he represented the constituency of Homburg . From October 29, 1957 to February 25, 1959, he was also a member of the European Parliament .

Public offices

From January 10, 1956 to October 13, 1957, Conrad was Minister of Labor of the Saarland and from February 26, 1959 to January 17, 1961 Minister of the Interior.
